Pune: In a significant decision benefiting residents, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has opted to keep property tax rates unchanged for the financial year 2025-26. This marks the ninth consecutive year without a tax increase, offering continued financial relief to property owners. The proposal, submitted by the tax collection department, received approval from civic commissioner Rajendra Bhosale.

The last hike of 10% was implemented in 2016, with no changes since then. As required by law, the administration finalized the tax assessments ahead of the February 20 deadline. The absence of a general body for the past three years has left policy decisions, including tax revisions, under the purview of an appointed administrator, who has chosen to maintain the current rates.

Efforts to Address Revenue Shortfall
Despite the relief for taxpayers, the decision is likely to impact PMC’s revenue. To counter the potential shortfall, the administration has intensified efforts to explore alternative revenue streams. These measures include identifying new taxable properties, recovering outstanding dues, and auctioning properties with unpaid taxes.

To bolster tax recovery, the PMC recently deployed additional personnel. Initially, 100 staff members were reassigned to the tax department, and 55 more have now been added to strengthen collection efforts.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, the municipal body had set a tax revenue target of ₹2,727 crore. However, with just over a month left in the financial year, collections have reached only ₹2,000 crore. The administration is now working to bridge this gap by maximizing recovery efforts.

Positive Response from Residents
The decision to maintain property tax rates has been welcomed by residents, particularly in light of rising living expenses and economic uncertainties. Homeowners and businesses have expressed appreciation for the continued financial relief.

Experts Caution on Long-Term Sustainability

Urban development experts have noted that while the move benefits citizens in the short term, the PMC must ensure stable revenue streams to fund essential infrastructure and public services. With increasing demands for better roads, water supply, and sanitation, maintaining financial stability without a tax increase will be a significant challenge.

The PMC’s decision to freeze property tax rates for the ninth consecutive year underscores its commitment to supporting residents. However, sustained efforts to strengthen revenue collection and fund urban development projects remain crucial for the city’s growth and stability.
