Pune: The Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard in Pune experienced a surge in flower trade ahead of Gudi Padwa, with farmers from Pune, Solapur, and Satara districts delivering large quantities of fresh blooms for sale.
This season, marigold cultivation has expanded significantly, leading to an abundant supply compared to the previous year. Consequently, marigold prices have declined due to the surplus availability.
Gudi Padwa, a major Hindu festival, fuels a sharp rise in flower demand. To secure better returns, farmers often reserve premium-quality flowers for this occasion. Flower trader Sagar Bhosale noted that while the supply saw a significant boost on Saturday, high-quality flowers still commanded strong prices.
During the festive period, there is a high demand for garlands, floral torans, and decorative flowers, with florists and decorators making bulk purchases. Flowers such as rosebuds, chrysanthemums, asters, and marigolds are particularly popular. Last year, marigold prices ranged between ₹50-₹60 per kilogram, depending on quality. However, due to this year’s large-scale production, prices have dropped considerably.
