Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has successfully overcome legal obstacles and resumed work on the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project, which had previously faced opposition from environmental activists due to concerns over tree felling. After a prolonged legal battle, the civic body has received the necessary approvals and is moving forward with full momentum.

As part of the river rejuvenation initiative, PMC has allocated ₹2 crore for tree plantation along the riverbanks, with a commitment to maintaining them for five years. The initiative aims to enhance the green cover along the river while ensuring sustainable urban development.

When the project was first introduced, environmental groups raised concerns about potential large-scale tree cutting. Addressing these concerns, PMC’s Garden Department included a tree plantation and maintenance plan in the project and invited bids through a tender process. Out of four participating organizations, two were deemed eligible. Pune-based Ishwari Associates submitted a bid 16.2% lower than the estimated cost, and the contract is now awaiting Standing Committee approval.

The riverfront development had sparked protests, with activist Sarang Yadwadkar filing a petition before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The case brought up concerns such as river flooding, ecological impact, and tree removal. The tribunal mandated that PMC obtain a revised environmental clearance before proceeding with the project.

The NGT’s directive temporarily halted activities like tree pruning, cutting, and transplantation, causing delays. To address these concerns, PMC submitted technical flood data to the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) for clearance. However, due to the absence of appointed SEIAA members, the approval process was delayed. Now, with all legal requirements fulfilled, the project is advancing at full speed.

Spanning 44 kilometers along the Mula-Mutha River, the riverfront development is being executed in 11 phases with a total estimated cost of ₹4,727 crore.
