Pune: In a shocking incident in Theur on Tuesday (April 8), a new mother allegedly drowned her two-month-old twin babies in a plastic water tank and then attempted to take her own life. The woman, reportedly under stress due to the slow growth of her twins—born through expensive IVF treatment after ten years of marriage—has been arrested by the Loni Kalbhor Police.
The accused has been identified as Pratibha Hemantkumar Mohite (35), a native of Sangli currently residing in Dattanagar, Theur, Pune. The case was filed by her brother, Pralhad Laxman Gonde, who also lives in Dattanagar, Theur.
According to police, Pratibha had been married for ten years. Her husband, a teacher, resides in Sangli. She had recently returned to her maternal home in Theur. The couple had been childless for a decade, and Pratibha was under significant mental stress during that period.
Eventually, with the help of IVF technology, the couple had twin babies. However, the process had been financially draining, and the babies’ development was reportedly not progressing as expected. This added to Pratibha’s emotional burden and stress.
On Tuesday morning, around 6:45 a.m., overwhelmed by the situation, she drowned her two-month-old twins in a plastic water tank on the terrace of their house. She then jumped into the same tank in an attempt to end her life.
Neighbours who noticed the incident quickly alerted the police. The officers rushed to the scene and pulled all three out of the tank. Unfortunately, both infants had already died.
Following the complaint by Pratibha’s brother, a murder case has been registered against her, and she was arrested by the police. She has been remanded to one day in police custody by the court.
Police confirmed that the twins had turned exactly two months old on the day of the incident.
