Pimpri Chinchwad: In the past year, Pimpri-Chinchwad recorded 23 maternal deaths out of 33,067 childbirths conducted in municipal and private hospitals. This marks a concerning rise in the maternal mortality rate, with excessive bleeding during delivery identified as the leading cause.
Over the last five years, 1.54 lakh deliveries took place in hospitals across the city, resulting in 72 maternal deaths. While advancements in medical infrastructure and services have been made—particularly with the opening of five new municipal hospitals—the upward trend in maternal deaths remains alarming.
Contributing Factors to Maternal Deaths
The primary causes include severe postpartum haemorrhage, infections, hypertensive disorders, and unsafe abortions. Conditions such as placenta previa, placental abruption, and uterine atony can lead to life-threatening bleeding. Poor hygiene, lack of prenatal care, and unsafe delivery practices further increase the risk of fatal complications. Chronic health issues like anaemia, diabetes, and malnutrition also heighten vulnerability during pregnancy.
Impact on Families
Maternal death has far-reaching consequences. The emotional trauma endured by families, especially the surviving spouse and newborn, underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and improved maternal care. The absence of a mother after childbirth affects the emotional and physical development of the child, placing greater pressure on the family.
Improved Healthcare Infrastructure
Municipal healthcare services have expanded with the launch of new hospitals in Bhosari, Thergaon, Akurdi, Chinchwad (Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Hospital), and Jijamata Hospital. These hospitals, along with several reputable private institutions, offer enhanced maternal and child health services.
Ensuring Safer Deliveries
Healthcare experts stress the importance of routine antenatal check-ups, institutional deliveries in hygienic environments, and emergency response systems during labour. Additionally, addressing socio-cultural barriers that limit women’s access to healthcare and increasing awareness about maternal health are critical steps toward reducing maternal deaths.
Annual Maternal Mortality Data: Despite increased access to quality healthcare, the rise in maternal deaths in Pimpri-Chinchwad highlights the need for more vigilant monitoring, timely interventions, and stronger public health policies to ensure safe childbirth for all women.
