Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has generated ₹10.15 crore through the auction of 473 outdated vehicles and scrap materials, officials from the motor vehicles department confirmed.

This auction was part of a planned effort to dispose of obsolete, unfit vehicles. According to Deputy Commissioner Jayant Bhosekar, the revenue will partly be used to procure new municipal vehicles. “We’ve collected ₹10.15 crore from the sale of old vehicles and spare parts. A portion will go towards acquiring new ones,” he said.

PMC currently operates a fleet of 1,163 vehicles. In compliance with the central government’s scrappage policy, vehicles older than 15 years are marked for deregistration and scrapping. The decommissioned vehicles had been parked at the corporation’s Gultekdi and Kondhwa depots.

Although the scrapping initiative began nearly two years ago, early efforts handled by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) saw limited progress. The process was later digitized, leading to higher participation and improved financial outcomes.

In addition to vehicles, the civic body auctioned off items such as worn-out tyres, high-mast light poles, metal cots, and unused materials from the road department.

PMC officials emphasized that such auctions not only help declutter civic depots but also contribute extra funds for infrastructure improvements. More auctions are planned to support vehicle upgrades and align with national scrapping guidelines.
