In a serious development, a case has been registered against Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas of Pune’s Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in connection with the death of 26-year-old Tanisha Bhise. According to police reports, Tanisha remained in the hospital’s OPD for over four and a half hours without receiving proper medical attention, despite being in critical condition.

The incident has sparked public outrage as Tanisha Bhise was allegedly denied timely treatment due to non-payment of Rs. 10 lakh, which the hospital had allegedly demanded as an advance. Her family has claimed that this financial hurdle and the delay in treatment directly led to her death.

Following a thorough investigation, a six-page report submitted by Sassoon Hospital’s Medical Committee found that Dr. Ghaisas was negligent and delayed treatment without justification. The report was submitted to the Pune Police, prompting them to file a case under Section 106(1) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to culpable homicide due to negligence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sambhaji Kadam confirmed that based on the medical committee’s findings, Dr. Ghaisas was found guilty of gross negligence and failure to provide emergency care, even after Tanisha was physically present in the OPD for several hours. The report explicitly mentioned that no immediate treatment was initiated, ultimately leading to the patient’s death.

Police have registered the FIR at Alankar Police Station following a complaint lodged by the Bhise family. Public pressure is also mounting for action against the hospital administration. Various social organizations and women’s rights groups are demanding stricter enforcement of patient rights and penal action against private hospitals prioritizing money over life.

Further investigation is underway, and the Pune police have stated they will be recording statements from other medical staff and hospital administration involved in the case.
