Pune: A vehicle thief was arrested in Hadapsar by the Crime Branch’s Unit-6 team during an investigation into an unrelated murder case. The accused was found riding a stolen Hero Duet two-wheeler, which was later confirmed to be linked to a theft case registered at Kalepadal Police Station.
The incident occurred at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Chowk in Krishnanagar, Hadapsar. While investigating a murder case under Fursungi Police Station limits, Police Constable Sachin Pawar (Buckle No. 8203) noticed the suspect riding suspiciously. Upon stopping the vehicle for verification, the team found discrepancies in the registration details.
The suspect, identified as Umesh Shahu Patange (31), a resident of Siddharth Nagar, NIBM-Kondhwa Road, Pune, gave evasive responses during questioning. A technical inspection of the vehicle’s engine and chassis numbers revealed it was stolen and linked to Kalepadal Police Station’s Crime Number 172/2025, registered under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused later confessed to the crime. The Crime Branch team seized the stolen Hero Duet, valued at approximately ₹20,000, and handed over both the suspect and vehicle to the Kalepadal Police Station for further investigation and legal action.
This swift action highlights the alertness of the Pune Crime Branch in cracking unrelated offences during routine investigations.
