Pune: In a decisive move against unlawful immigration, Ambegaon police arrested three Bangladeshi nationals—including a young woman—from a rented apartment in Pune’s Katraj locality on Friday. The arrests were made following a tip-off regarding foreign nationals allegedly residing without valid documents.
Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zine from Ambegaon police station confirmed that a team was sent to the location based on specific intelligence. “We had credible information about three foreigners staying without proper documentation. A raid was carried out, and all three were taken into custody,” he said.
During initial questioning, the individuals admitted they were from the Khulna and Norail districts of Bangladesh. None of them could furnish valid identification or legal permission to reside in India.
Among those apprehended was a 22-year-old woman who had reportedly arrived in Pune just a fortnight ago. The two men, aged 32 and 33, were found to be working at a nearby poultry shop. Notably, one of them had a previous record of illegal residence and had been detained by Navi Mumbai police in an earlier case. “This particular individual was released on bail at the time. We are currently probing why deportation procedures were not followed after his earlier arrest,” added Inspector Zine.
Authorities have now initiated deportation proceedings against all three suspects, who are believed to have entered India in search of work opportunities.
In a connected development, action has also been initiated against the landlord of the rented flat. Police stated that the property owner did not carry out the mandatory background verification of the tenants, a legal requirement when leasing property to foreign nationals. This lapse has led to the registration of a formal case.
Further investigations are ongoing.
