Pune: In a move to modernise urban traffic enforcement, the Pune City Traffic Police have introduced an AI-based system to automatically detect and penalise traffic rule violations. Launched as a Proof of Concept (PoC), the system is currently being tested on Fergusson College Road.

The cutting-edge technology uses AI-enabled surveillance cameras to identify key infractions such as illegal parking and wrong-side driving. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the system can function without the need for constant manual monitoring, allowing for quicker and more accurate enforcement.

The initiative was inaugurated under the guidance of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, with support from Additional Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma and other senior officials. The project is being carried out in partnership with Sensen AI, represented by Vijay Khupse.

According to the system’s specifications, any vehicle parked in a no-parking zone or blocking traffic flow for more than three minutes will automatically be flagged. The AI software analyses real-time CCTV footage to identify violations and generate alerts, which then prompt the traffic control room to issue penalties or e-challans instantly.

Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police (East), shared that four AI-equipped cameras have been installed along F C Road for a 90-day trial period. At the end of this phase, data collected will be reviewed to decide on the next course of action.
This marks Pune’s first attempt to integrate AI into its traffic management framework. Officials are optimistic that the system will not only reduce the burden on traffic personnel but also improve compliance with traffic laws and enhance overall road safety.
