Ahmedabad : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited the site of the devastating plane crash near Ahmedabad and expressed deep sorrow over the scale of the tragedy. Standing amidst the wreckage, an emotional Modi said, “Everything is destroyed.” The Prime Minister also visited Civil Hospital to meet the injured survivors and interact with the medical staff treating them.

Among those he spoke to was Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the crash, who is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries in the C7 ward. Modi enquired about his condition and assured that all necessary medical assistance would be provided. At least 25 injured individuals are being treated in Civil Hospital.

Modi was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and senior state and central officials. After the hospital visit and inspection of the crash site, Modi shared an update on social media, stating, “The loss caused by the Ahmedabad plane crash is immeasurable. The sudden and horrifying manner in which so many lives were lost has left the entire nation in mourning. My deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. We understand their pain.”

In another post, he added, “Visited the crash site today. Everything is in ruins. Rescue and emergency teams are working tirelessly.”

About the Crash

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight AI-171 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM on Thursday, bound for London Gatwick. However, within seconds of take-off, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into the B.J. Medical College hostel building near Meghaninagar, erupting into flames.

According to preliminary reports, 242 people were onboard, including cabin crew and pilots. Tragically, 241 of them are confirmed dead. The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, reportedly escaped due to being seated near the emergency exit and is now receiving medical care.

Notable Victims

Among those who perished was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was en route to London for an event hosted by the Indian diaspora. Several international passengers and families, including women and children, were on board.

Investigation and Response

Emergency services responded swiftly, and the wreckage has been secured for forensic and technical investigations. Civil aviation authorities have initiated a high-level probe to determine the cause of the crash, including the possibility of mechanical failure or sabotage. Black box recovery operations are underway.

The Gujarat government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for the injured. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry is expected to hold a press conference detailing preliminary findings later this week.
