Pune: In a significant development, Kale Padal Police Station has apprehended Javed Nabi, a known repeat offender, on charges of blackmail, harassment, and making acid attack threats against a woman. Nabi allegedly used digitally altered photographs and explicit content to blackmail the victim, demanding both money and sexual favors under the threat of releasing the manipulated visuals online.
The accused is said to have subjected the woman to continuous intimidation, including threats to make the doctored images viral on social media platforms if his demands were not fulfilled. Disturbingly, he even attempted to assault her with acid — a chilling indication of his dangerous intent and criminal tendencies.
Investigations have also brought to light the involvement of his wife, Shaista Nabi, who is accused of actively aiding and concealing her husband’s criminal actions. Authorities revealed that this is not an isolated case. Nabi has a pattern of similar misconduct, reportedly targeting several women in the past. Complaints have emerged regarding his behavior toward a former female tenant at Raheja Garden Phase 3 and another at Archana Paradise Society. In many instances, Shaista allegedly supported his actions by intimidating victims and suppressing their complaints.
The swift arrest was carried out under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Mansingh Patil, who emphasized the police department’s commitment to protecting women from digital and physical threats. “Women should not be afraid to come forward. The police are here to support and safeguard them. Their identities will be kept confidential, and strict legal action will follow,” he stated.
Police Sub-Inspector Anilraje Nimbalkar, who is leading the ongoing investigation, echoed the call for courage: “No woman should suffer in silence. Timely reporting is crucial to stopping such predators.”
This disturbing case underscores broader concerns about women’s safety and the increasing prevalence of cyber-enabled crimes.
The victim’s father, a retired officer of the Indian Army, has called for the harshest charges to be applied under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, acid attack statutes, and cyber crime laws. “Let this case be a warning to those who think they can threaten women without facing consequences. Justice must be swift and strong,” he asserted.
