Pune : A 72-year-old woman doctor from Pune has fallen victim to a cyber fraud in which scammers posed as gas company representatives and duped her of nearly ₹5 lakh. The incident came to light after a complaint was registered at Alankar Police Station.

The victim has been identified as Dr. Maya Shriram Tulpule, a resident of Karvenagar. According to the police, she received a WhatsApp call from a cyber fraudster who claimed to be calling from the customer care department of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL). The caller told her that her gas connection would be disconnected due to non-payment of bills.

To “resolve” the issue, the scammer sent her an APK (Android Package Kit) file via WhatsApp and asked her to download it. Trusting the caller, Dr. Tulpule downloaded the file, which led to her phone being hacked. The fraudsters then accessed her bank account and siphoned off ₹4.95 lakh.

Realizing she had been cheated, Dr. Tulpule approached Alankar Police Station and filed a complaint. Based on her report, the police have registered a case against unidentified cyber criminals under charges of online impersonation and financial fraud through misinformation. Inspector Anil Mane is currently investigating the case.
