Pune: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed authorities to consider imposing the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on the accused involved in the recent firing incident at the New Ambika kala Kendra in Wakhari, Daund Taluka.
The case sparked political controversy after it emerged that the firing was allegedly carried out by the cousin of a ruling party MLA. Three individuals, including the MLA’s relative, have been arrested by the police.
The incident occurred on Monday night between 10:30 PM and 11 PM, when Kailas alias Balasaheb Hiraman Mandekar fired shots in the air while dancing at the event. A woman present at the scene fainted due to the chaos, but no injuries were reported.
Following growing public and media pressure, MLA Shankar Mandekar’s cousin Balasaheb Mandekar, along with Ganpat Jagtap, Chandrakant Marne, and an unidentified person, were booked in connection with the case. Allegations surfaced suggesting attempts were made to suppress the case due to the accused’s political connections.
Speaking to the media, Ajit Pawar, who is also the Guardian Minister of Pune District, emphasized that no political interference would be tolerated in the investigation. He stated: “I have received detailed updates from police officials. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident did cause panic. A woman fainted and was later revived. I have instructed police not to let any political pressure influence the case. Whoever is involved must be arrested, regardless of their background or political affiliation. The accused is not the MLA’s real brother he is likely a cousin. I’ve asked for a thorough investigation.”
Ajit Pawar further recommended that if evidence supports it, MCOCA should be applied to ensure a strong and uncompromising legal action against those responsible.
The case remains under investigation, and the Deputy CM assured the public that strict action will be taken based on the findings.
