Pune : Residents of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are growing increasingly concerned about the disruptive and unlawful midnight firecracker celebrations that are becoming more frequent in the cities. These gatherings, often held by groups of 25-30 individuals to celebrate birthdays, are causing severe noise pollution, air pollution, and contributing to a rise in criminal activity, according to local citizens.
In a letter sent to the Police Commissioner, residents voiced frustration over the disregard for law and order, as these gatherings disturb the peace of the neighborhoods. The celebrations, which can last up to an hour, involve the setting off of loud fireworks, sometimes reaching a noise level that can be heard a kilometer away.
The letter highlighted the negative impact of these celebrations on vulnerable groups, particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions. Furthermore, residents have expressed concerns that these gatherings are often associated with criminal behavior, with some participants having criminal backgrounds.
The citizens also pointed out that these celebrations violate guidelines set by the Supreme Court and High Court, which prohibit noise-polluting activities after 10 PM. These activities not only breach legal provisions but also contravene the Environmental Protection Act.
Despite repeated calls to the police control room (112) reporting these disturbances, residents claim the police response is insufficient. While officers reportedly ask the groups to disperse, fireworks are often set off again once the police leave the scene.
In their appeal, residents called on the Police Commissioner to take stronger action against such late-night celebrations, citing the negative effects on both public health and the city’s peace. They have also requested a ban on fireworks after 10 PM and urged police stations to enforce these regulations effectively.
Additionally, residents have demanded accountability for police officers who have failed to address the growing problem of crime associated with these late-night activities.
The citizens are hopeful that immediate action will be taken to curb noise and air pollution, maintain law and order, and ensure a safer environment for everyone in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
