Pune: In a swift crackdown on street crime, Sahkarnagar police have arrested a man who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman during her early morning walk near Siddhivinayak Temple in Dhankawadi. The suspect had disguised himself as a food delivery agent to carry out the theft on May 16.

The incident took place around 6:00 a.m. when the accused approached the woman on a two-wheeler and snatched her mangalsutra before fleeing. The case was filed under IPC Sections 304 and 309(6) at Sahkarnagar Police Station.

A dedicated team of investigators, led by Police Sub-Inspector Sagar Patil under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Rahul Gaud, swung into action immediately. Officers reviewed over 150 CCTV clips from across the vicinity to track the suspect’s movements. Their breakthrough came when they identified a man matching the description near Ganesh Chowk in Ambegaon Pathar, wearing a black-and-yellow T-shirt and blue track pants.

Upon being approached, the man attempted to escape but was swiftly apprehended by the police. During questioning, he confessed to the crime and admitted to posing as a Swiggy delivery personnel while using a two-wheeler to commit the theft. The accused, a resident of Samata Colony in Ambegaon Pathar, was found to have pawned the stolen gold chain.

Authorities managed to recover the two-tola gold mangalsutra worth ₹90,000, the two-wheeler used in the crime valued at ₹60,000, and ₹1 lakh obtained from pawning the jewellery — bringing the total recovery to ₹2.5 lakh.

The accused has been remanded to police custody until May 20, 2025, as further inquiries continue.

This operation was conducted under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police (South West Region) Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Circle 2) Smartana Patil, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Swargate Division) Rahul Aware. The investigation team also included PI (Crime) Surekha Chavan, PSI Sagar Patil, and constables Bapu Khutwad, Sagar Sutkar, Yogesh Dhole, Pradip Renuse, Mahesh Bhagat, Bajrang Pawar, Akash Kirtikar, Khandu Shinde, Amit Padmale, and Maroti Nalwad.

The case stands as a testament to the Pune police’s prompt action, technological diligence, and unwavering dedication to public safety.
