Pune: In a significant development in the Tanisha Bhise death case, a state-appointed inquiry committee has held Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital responsible for serious lapses in medical care. Following the release of the committee’s report, senior doctor Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas has tendered his resignation from the hospital.

On April 4, 2025, the state government’s inquiry committee visited Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital and conducted an in-depth investigation into the incident. The report revealed that Tanisha Bhise, who was seven months pregnant, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and required urgent medical attention. However, the hospital refused to admit her under its charitable scheme, despite her eligibility. Instead, Dr. Ghaisas reportedly advised the patient’s family, “If you cannot pay the deposit, take her to Sassoon Hospital.”

Despite the family’s financial constraints, the hospital failed to fulfill its ethical and social responsibility, the report states. According to Section 41AA of the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950, charitable hospitals are mandated to provide immediate primary care in emergency situations. The committee concluded that this requirement was blatantly violated.

Additionally, the hospital was found to have breached provisions of the Maharashtra Nursing Home Registration Rules, 2021 and the Indian Medical Council Regulations, 2002. These regulations require hospitals to prioritize life-saving emergency care, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the hospital’s administrative practices and its approach to emergency medical services. Dr. Ghaisas’ resignation is being seen as a fallout of internal pressure following the report’s findings. Public trust in the hospital’s decision-making and ethics has significantly eroded, with calls for strict action now being raised by the public and health authorities alike.

Meanwhile, since the case falls under the category of a “maternal death,” a separate and detailed investigation is underway by the Maternal Mortality Review Committee. The final report is expected to be submitted soon. However, the initial findings have already cast a shadow over the reputation of one of Pune’s leading hospitals.
