Pune: In a shocking incident, a speeding car driven by an allegedly drunk driver ran over twelve students in Sadashiv Peth on Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM near Bhave High School. All the victims were preparing for the MPSC (Maharashtra Public Service Commission) examinations and had stopped near a local tea stall when the accident took place.
According to police officials, the driver, identified as Jayram Shivaji Mule, a resident of Samarth Nagar Colony in Bibwewadi, Pune, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was driving a Hyundai tourist vehicle at high speed when he lost control and rammed into the group of students standing outside the NathSai Tea Stall.
The Vishrambaug police have taken the driver into custody and initiated further investigation into the matter. The injured students have been admitted to various hospitals across the city, including Sancheti Hospital and Modak Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
This incident has sparked outrage among residents and fellow students, raising concerns over road safety and the growing menace of drunk driving in the city.
