Pune: In a distressing case of cyber fraud, a 65-year-old woman from Wanawadi lost ₹14 lakh after scammers posing as TV repair service representatives deceived her. The fraudsters manipulated the official customer service number of a television manufacturing company, leading the woman to unknowingly contact them instead of the legitimate service center.
According to police reports, the woman encountered a technical issue with her TV and searched for customer support. Unaware that the number had been altered by cybercriminals, she reached out for assistance. The fraudsters then sent her a malicious link, instructing her to enter personal and banking details under the pretense of resolving her complaint.
As soon as she provided the information, the criminals exploited it to transfer ₹14 lakh from her bank account through multiple online transactions. The fraud came to light when the woman noticed the unauthorized debits and promptly reported the incident to the Wanawadi Police Station.
A case has been registered, and Inspector Govind Jadhav is leading the investigation. Authorities are urging citizens to verify customer service contacts from official company websites to avoid falling prey to such scams.
