Pune: The “Chalo PMC” organization has raised concerns over the felling of more than 3,500 trees, many of which were aged between 40 to 100 years, due to the metro project in Pune. The group claims that the environmental damage caused by this deforestation has not been addressed and that no successful replanting efforts have been made. Pune Metro officials, however, have rejected these accusations, stating that the claims are unclear.
On March 5, representatives from “Chalo PMC” met with Pune Metro officials to discuss the matter. The organization highlighted the removal of several century-old banyan trees, some of which were planted during the British era, without adequate steps being taken to offset the environmental damage. While the metro authorities had assured new tree plantings, the group argues that the replanting has been inadequate. Additionally, they pointed out that trees planted in open spaces or on hilltops are struggling to survive due to their reliance on tanker water.
Call for Evidence of Successful Replanting
Amit Singh, a representative of “Chalo PMC/Pune Samvad,” challenged the authorities to provide proof of any successful replanting of trees that were removed for the metro project. He also suggested that corporate interests and political pressure are overshadowing environmental concerns, forcing citizens to consider legal action.
Pune Metro’s Response
In defense, Pune Metro acknowledged the necessity of tree removal for the development of urban infrastructure, which aims to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion. The authorities claimed to have replanted 600 trees and preserved existing trees where possible. Notably, they highlighted the conservation of large banyan trees near the Police Headquarters and COEP, as well as instances where trees were pruned instead of being felled.
Despite these statements, concerns about rising air pollution, increasing dust, and the diminishing green cover continue to grow among both environmentalists and the public.
