The Forum for IT Employees (FITE), Maharashtra, has called for the establishment of a dedicated transit hub on the western side of Pune to improve connectivity for daily commuters, particularly students, IT professionals, and senior citizens. The demand stems from the ongoing inconvenience faced by travelers who are forced to board intercity buses from roadside stops along highways.
The proposed facility would serve rapidly growing neighbourhoods like Hinjawadi, Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, Aundh, Bavdhan, Sus, Pashan, and parts of Kothrud — all of which have become hotspots for the IT sector, residential complexes, and educational institutions.
“We’re not just asking for a stop — we need a full-fledged bus depot where intercity buses begin their journey, not just pick up passengers waiting along the highway,” FITE stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Currently, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) operates four major depots in the Pune Metropolitan Region — Swargate, Pune Station (Shivneri), Pimpri Colony, and Wakdewadi (a temporary setup in place of the original Shivajinagar stand, which was moved due to metro construction).
Swargate remains the most prominent hub, serving destinations across Maharashtra. It is also set to become a multi-modal transport center, integrated with metro access, private taxis, and rickshaw services, as part of a larger commercial complex.
Despite these facilities, residents of Hinjawadi and Wakad — key IT and industrial zones — face long and inconvenient commutes to reach the nearest bus depots. As development in the area continues, FITE has renewed its demand for a new bus terminal in the western region to meet the needs of the growing population.
Existing Major Bus Stations:
Swargate: Central intercity and intracity bus hub connecting to major cities across the state.
Pune Station (Shivneri): Operates premium Shivneri buses, primarily between Pune and Mumbai.
Wakdewadi (temporary Shivajinagar): Functions as a temporary intercity terminal during metro construction.
Pimpri Colony: Serves industrial and residential commuters from Pimpri-Chinchwad, offering routes to western Maharashtra.
FITE hopes that the authorities will soon address the increasing transport demand in Pune’s booming western corridor.
