Mumbai: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has uncovered assets worth crores belonging to former Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta during a secret investigation. Shocking revelations include a luxurious flat worth ₹22 crore in Santacruz, Mumbai, and an opulent villa in Pune valued at ₹25 crore.
The ACB has concluded its confidential inquiry and has sought permission to initiate an open investigation. This marks the first instance of such a high-ranking IPS officer being subjected to an inquiry of this nature.
The probe was launched following a complaint by RTI activist Sudhir Alhat, who alleged that Gupta had amassed properties worth crores. Based on preliminary findings, the ACB has now approached its Director General for approval to proceed with an open inquiry. If granted, Gupta could face significant legal challenges.
According to Alhat’s complaint, Gupta owns a luxurious villa in the Sweet Water Villas project of Amanora Township in Pune, valued at ₹25 crore. Additionally, a ₹22 crore plush apartment in Santacruz, Mumbai, has also been linked to the former commissioner.
The staggering value of these properties has raised serious questions about Gupta’s sources of income. The ACB’s secret investigation reportedly uncovered crucial evidence, leading to their request for an open probe.
Alhat has demanded a swift approval for the open inquiry and has also called for a review of Gupta’s tenure as Pune Police Commissioner, particularly the cases registered during his term and the firearm licenses issued under his authority.
