Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for unseasonal rain and hailstorms across various districts of Maharashtra, including Pune, for the next two days. This comes after several regions in the state experienced heavy rainfall and hail on Sunday, despite ongoing heatwave conditions in other parts of the country.
While areas like Vidarbha continue to endure scorching temperatures, other districts in Maharashtra are witnessing an unusual shift in weather. The IMD has attributed these changing patterns to a low-pressure system moving eastward from western Rajasthan to northern Vidarbha, bringing localized rainfall and hail.
Districts including Jalgaon, Nanded, and Pimpri-Chinchwad reported intense showers and hail on Sunday. In Jalgaon, rain began suddenly around 1:30 PM after a mostly overcast morning, aligning with IMD’s earlier forecast.
For Monday, the weather department has predicted thunderstorms, rain, and wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h in areas like Nandurbar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Beed. Further east, regions like Latur, Dharashiv, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Yavatmal are also expected to witness significant rainfall.
Over the next two days, cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Sindhudurg are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall. Cloudy skies have already enveloped Mumbai, hinting at the incoming weather change.
Despite the unseasonal showers, heatwave conditions persist across central Maharashtra. Daytime temperatures remain around 40°C in many places. Coastal regions have shown slight relief with a minor drop in temperatures, but clearer skies after rainfall are once again pushing temperatures up.
According to the IMD, the current weather shift is due to a previously dissipated low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and a newly active low-pressure trough extending from western Rajasthan to northern Vidarbha. Additionally, rising surface temperatures have increased evaporation, creating ideal conditions for sudden rain and hailstorms.
Authorities are advising residents to stay alert as unseasonal weather may affect normal life and farming activities in the coming days.
