New Delhi: In the aftermath of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that left 28 people, mostly tourists, dead, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has unveiled a series of stringent measures aimed at Pakistan. The decisions were made during a high-level security review meeting on Wednesday, reflecting India’s toughened stance on cross-border terrorism.

One of the most significant actions includes the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. This landmark treaty will remain on hold until Pakistan provides credible and irreversible proof of disengagement from supporting terrorism across borders.

Further escalating the response, the Indian government has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Attari Integrated Checkpost. However, individuals who have crossed into India with valid endorsements will be permitted to return via the same route until May 1, 2025.

The CCS also announced the withdrawal of SAARC visa exemption privileges for Pakistani citizens. All SPES visas previously issued have been revoked, and Pakistani nationals currently in India under these categories must exit the country within 48 hours.

Diplomatic ties are being scaled back as well. Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors stationed at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata and must depart within a week. In a reciprocal move, India will also withdraw its corresponding advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad, effectively eliminating these diplomatic channels.

Addressing the press, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misry stated that India remains steadfast in its resolve to pursue justice. “The CCS directed all security agencies to stay on high alert. India is determined to bring both the attackers and their backers to justice. Just like the successful extradition of Tahawwur Rana, we will relentlessly track down all those involved in terrorism against India.”

Earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed strong condemnation of the Pahalgam massacre and assured the public of a firm and decisive retaliation. “We won’t stop at the attackers. The masterminds behind this heinous act will also be dealt with,” he declared.

These measures underscore the Indian government’s uncompromising approach to national security and its intent to hold all perpetrators and supporters of terrorism accountable.
