Maharashtra: State currently ranks third nationwide in road accident-related deaths. Despite several initiatives rolled out by the state’s transport department — including awareness campaigns and infrastructure upgrades — the expected impact on fatality rates has not been fully realized. Officials note that human error continues to play a central role in nearly 80% of all road accidents. Common causes include speeding, reckless lane-cutting, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Over the past five years, road accidents and related deaths have continued to rise across the state.

2020: 24,971 accidents | 11,569 deaths
2021: 29,477 accidents | 13,528 deaths

2023: 35,243 accidents | 15,336 deaths
2024: 36,118 accidents | 15,715 deaths
The upward trend signals an urgent need for stricter enforcement, public awareness, and the integration of smarter road safety technologies.
