Mumbai : Maharashtra’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection, Dhananjay Munde, has publicly revealed he is battling Bell’s Palsy, a neurological condition causing facial paralysis, which has left him unable to speak continuously for even two minutes. The announcement comes amid mounting political pressure over his alleged involvement in a murder case and corruption allegations .
Munde disclosed via a social media post that he was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy following a 15-day recovery period from eye surgery performed under renowned ophthalmologist Dr. T.P. Lahane. The condition has weakened his facial muscles, making speech arduous and forcing him to skip key cabinet meetings and public events .
He is currently undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Reliance Hospital under the guidance of neurologist Dr. Arun Shah. Munde expressed optimism about recovering soon and resuming his ministerial duties .
Earlier in July 2024, Munde underwent gallbladder surgery and was advised bed rest, highlighting a pattern of health challenges amid political turbulence .
Munde faces scrutiny over the arrest of his aide, Walmik Karad, in connection with the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. Opposition parties and activists, including Anjali Damania, have demanded his resignation, citing alleged corruption during his tenure as Agriculture Minister .
His recent absences from meetings, initially attributed to post-eye surgery recovery, are now linked to Bell’s Palsy. Officials confirmed that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar were informed of his health constraints .
Bell’s Palsy is a sudden facial paralysis caused by inflammation or damage to the facial nerve, often triggered by viral infections like colds or flu. Symptoms include facial drooping, difficulty speaking, and loss of taste .
While most patients recover within weeks to months, severe cases may require prolonged therapy. Munde’s treatment includes medication and physiotherapy to restore muscle function .
In his post, Munde assured I have informed the CM and Deputy CM about my health. I am confident of overcoming this condition soon and returning to public service.”*
His disclosure has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters rallying for his recovery and critics questioning the timing amid ongoing investigations.
As Munde focuses on recovery, the political spotlight remains on his ability to navigate both health challenges and mounting allegations. His return to office could hinge on medical progress and the outcome of judicial inquiries into the Beed case.
