Maharashtra: State is currently experiencing diverse weather conditions, with parts of the state witnessing unseasonal rainfall and storms, while other regions remain in the grip of intense heat.
In an unusual turn for mid-April, Mumbai and sections of the Konkan coast are experiencing weather reminiscent of the monsoon. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rainfall is expected over the next few days in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Sindhudurg, and Palghar.
On Sunday, brief but intense downpours struck cities including Jalgaon, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Nanded. These showers, lasting approximately 30 minutes, were accompanied by strong winds. Jalgaon also reported isolated hailstorms. The IMD attributed this weather pattern to a low-pressure trough extending from western Rajasthan to northern Vidarbha, which is generating favourable conditions for rainfall across the state.
The IMD has issued alerts for rain and thunderstorms in several districts such as Nandurbar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Jalna, and Beed. From Monday onwards, heavier rainfall is expected in Latur, Dharashiv, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Yavatmal. Wind speeds in these areas are predicted to range between 30 and 40 km/h.
The recent spells of rain and hail are being driven by increased atmospheric moisture, caused by elevated daytime temperatures and higher rates of evaporation.
While some regions are receiving a temporary respite through rainfall, much of Vidarbha continues to suffer under extreme heat. Temperatures in several areas remain close to 40°C. Although passing showers provide short-lived relief, the skies tend to clear quickly, allowing the heat to return.
However, a slight dip in temperature has been observed along the coastal belt, hinting at a possible shift in weather conditions in the coming days.
With these unstable conditions affecting both agriculture and daily life, the IMD has advised residents to closely follow local weather updates. Although some districts can expect a break from the heat, others may need to endure high temperatures a little longer.
