Pune: Passenger safety in Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses has come under intense scrutiny as new data reveals a disturbing 301 accidents involving Pune Division buses over the past 21 months. The figures highlight growing concerns about the safety measures in place, as passengers continue to face significant risks on Maharashtra’s roads.

Between March 2023 and December 2024, these accidents led to 35 fatalities, with 17 deaths in 2023 and 18 in 2024. The data further revealed that 150 incidents were classified as major accidents, while 126 were considered minor. The accidents occurred across expressways, highways, and urban roads, posing a widespread safety threat to daily commuters.

The alarming frequency of these accidents raises serious questions about the maintenance of MSRTC buses and the effectiveness of its driver training programs. Despite frequent accidents, there appears to be insufficient progress in implementing preventive measures or improving driver competence. Nearly half of the reported accidents were categorized as major, amplifying concerns over the safety of public transportation.

An MSRTC official responded by emphasizing ongoing driver training programs and proactive safety measures, such as random inspections, including checks for alcohol consumption. “In the past six months, action has been taken against six drivers—three have been permanently terminated, and three others remain under suspension,” the official confirmed. “MSRTC will not tolerate any violation of its norms.”

Despite these actions, the rising number of accidents highlights the urgent need for stronger safety protocols, improved vehicle maintenance, and closer monitoring of driver performance to ensure safer travel for all passengers.
