New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the shocking rape incident that occurred in a Shivshahi bus at Pune’s busy Swargate depot. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra, urging immediate and strict action in the case.
The horrific incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday when a 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside the Shivshahi bus parked at Swargate bus depot. Expressing serious concern, Rahatkar has directed the police to take swift action and submit a copy of the FIR along with an action-taken report to the Commission within three days.
Condemning the brutal crime, the NCW has raised serious concerns about public safety, especially since the accused is still absconding. The Commission has instructed the police to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation without any delay or negligence. Additionally, it has emphasized that the victim must be provided with all necessary assistance, including medical care, psychological counseling, and security.
The NCW has further urged authorities to ensure that the accused is apprehended at the earliest and prosecuted under the Indian Penal Code, 2023, with the strictest legal measures. The Commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring justice. It also called on law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety measures and take more effective steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
