Pune: A controversy erupted today after it was discovered that the name of the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Mhalunge-Balewadi was maliciously altered on Google Maps to read “Chhatrapati Aurangzeb Alamgir Sports Complex.” The unauthorized change has triggered widespread anger among devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, sportspersons, local residents, and concerned citizens.
Local political leader Amol Balwadkar swiftly responded to the incident, stating that numerous individuals had approached him to express their outrage. “This is a deeply disrespectful act aimed at hurting public sentiment and sowing discord,” he said.
Following the incident, Balwadkar visited Baner Police Station and filed a formal complaint with Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant. He demanded a thorough investigation and immediate action against those responsible for this digital sabotage.
Balwadkar condemned the misuse of platforms like Google Maps to distort facts and fuel communal tension. “Tampering with digital platforms to alter historical names is not only a deliberate insult but also a dangerous trend that threatens social harmony,” he remarked.
He urged law enforcement to act swiftly in identifying and penalizing the culprits, emphasizing that such incidents must be treated with the utmost seriousness. “The Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex is a landmark that embodies historical and cultural pride. Any unlawful attempt to change its identity must be dealt with firmly to prevent further disturbances,” he added.
The incident highlights the growing misuse of digital tools to manipulate public perception and underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight and prompt corrective action.
