Pimpri Chinchwad: To combat illegal waste dumping, the Health Department staff of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have adopted an innovative approach by transforming a garbage-ridden public space in Chinchwad’s Kavale Vakhar, Mohannagar, into an artistic installation.
By repurposing discarded brooms, bamboo sticks, and other waste materials, the initiative, titled ‘Art from Waste,’ has not only cleaned the area but also turned it into a selfie spot, encouraging residents to maintain cleanliness.
Innovative Solution for Public Sanitation
Despite repeated warnings from municipal authorities, the open plot at Kavale Vakhar, Mohannagar, continued to be used as a dumping ground. In response, PCMC’s health staff took matters into their own hands, cleaning the site and transforming waste materials into artistic displays. This initiative has received widespread appreciation, with the local community actively participating in maintaining the area.
This transformation was led by Sheetal Wakade, Regional Officer of PCMC ‘A’ Ward Office, Assistant Health Officer Raju Sable, Chief Health Inspector Dattatray Gange, and Health Inspector Vikas Shinde from Ward No. 14, along with other municipal staff.
Expanding the Initiative
PCMC had earlier launched a ‘Dustbin-Free City’ campaign, removing over 250 waste bins across the city. However, around 60 locations still experience illegal dumping, mainly by early morning walkers, office-goers, and business owners.
To address this, PCMC plans to implement the ‘Art from Waste’ concept at 35 more locations in the next eight days, converting dumping spots into selfie points to discourage further littering.
With creativity and community involvement, PCMC aims to promote long-term sustainable waste management while enhancing the city’s visual appeal.
