Pune: In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, 12 stray dogs were reportedly poisoned within a gated residential complex, sparking widespread condemnation from animal welfare groups and concerned citizens. The incident took place on April 13 at Mahindra Antheia Society, located near the PCMC Administrative Building.
The Sant Tukaram Nagar Police have arrested 37-year-old Alaukik Raju Kotecha, a resident of the society, in connection with the suspected poisoning. Preliminary findings suggest he may have intentionally harmed the animals.
Of the 12 dogs affected, three died on the spot, while the remaining nine succumbed to poisoning during medical treatment. These strays had long been part of the neighborhood ecosystem and were familiar to many residents.
Crucial evidence came from CCTV footage within the society, which showed Kotecha driving his car around the premises four to five times on the morning of the incident. Several dogs were seen following his vehicle in the clips.
Investigators later examined Kotecha’s mobile phone and reportedly discovered searches related to poisoning techniques, further implicating him in the crime. His movements and behavior around the time of the incident added to police suspicions.
Senior Police Inspector Vanita Dhumal, leading the investigation, confirmed that the suspect was observed at the location during the early hours of April 13. She stated that while significant evidence has been collected, the case remains open, and further legal action will be pursued as new details emerge. The motive for the alleged act is still under scrutiny.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media and among local animal rights activists, who are demanding strict punishment for those involved in cruelty towards animals.
