Pune: After initiating efforts to clean the Indrayani River, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has now turned its focus toward restoring the Pavana River. As part of this initiative, 15 major drains within PMRDA limits—identified as key sources of pollution—will be systematically monitored and treated to prevent contaminated water from entering the river.

The river restoration strategy includes thorough cleaning of the riverbed, establishment of sewage treatment systems for both domestic and industrial waste, and enhancement of riverbank areas. Officials stated that the blueprint is inspired by the model implemented for the Indrayani River rejuvenation.

A detailed project report (DPR) valued at ₹218 crore has been drawn up to address pollution in the Pavana river basin. This DPR will be submitted to the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, via the Maharashtra Environment Department, for funding approval. The financial model proposed includes 60% funding from the Centre and 40% from the state. The PMRDA’s authority board granted administrative approval for ₹197 crore during its meeting on September 24, 2024.

Following an extensive survey of the areas upstream and downstream of the Pavana dam, 15 drains were identified as significant polluters. The plan involves intercepting and treating the wastewater from these drains to substantially reduce river pollution. Other elements of the project include upgrading cremation grounds near the river and conducting in-depth studies on waste disposal practices in surrounding villages.
