Pune: The Family Court in Shivajinagar reprimanded a son for refusing to provide financial support to his elderly parents, emphasizing that taking care of one’s parents is both a moral duty and a legal responsibility. Judge K.V. Thakur ruled in favor of the elderly couple, ordering the son to pay ₹16,000 per month as maintenance.

The elderly couple, who have three daughters and a son, had filed a petition in March last year seeking financial support from their son. Despite receiving a good salary from his private-sector job, the son had neglected his parents, forcing them to live with their son-in-law. The couple, suffering from diabetes, heart disease, and paralysis, argued that they struggled to manage on a meager ₹1,300 pension and needed financial assistance.

Through their lawyers, Advocate Janhavi Bhosale and Advocate Bhalchandra Dhapte, the elderly parents approached the court, stating that they had spent a significant amount on their son’s education but were now left without support. The son, on the other hand, contended that he already had financial obligations, including a home loan and vehicle loan due to his vertigo condition, and claimed that his parents were harassing him unnecessarily.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Judge K.V. Thakur ruled in favor of the elderly couple, stating that caring for parents is not just a moral obligation but also a legal one. The court ordered the son to pay ₹8,000 per month to each parent, totaling ₹16,000.
