Pune: A 20-year-old MBBS student tragically ended his life in the early hours of Monday at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, allegedly due to academic pressure and prolonged depression. In a poignant suicide note sent to his parents via social media, the student expressed a heartfelt plea for educational reforms — calling for the removal of Mughal, French, and Russian history from the curriculum and instead advocating the inclusion of the life and values of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The deceased has been identified as Utkarsh Mahadev Shingne, a native of Bhagyanagar in Beed district and originally from Bhopal. He was a medical student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, and had arrived in Pune on May 8 to participate in an intercollegiate sports competition being hosted at AFMC.
According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred inside the hostel restroom of the AFMC campus. Utkarsh was found in a pool of blood after reportedly stabbing himself with a knife he had purchased online. Despite the swift arrival of police and medical personnel, he was declared dead before any medical intervention could be provided.
Senior officials including Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Rajkumar Shinde, Assistant Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Godse, and Senior Police Inspector Satyajit Adamane visited the scene. A case of accidental death has been registered at Wanwadi Police Station, and a full investigation is underway.
