Pune: The city’s temperature is rising, increasing the risk of heatstroke. If not treated in time, heatstroke and the resulting dehydration can be fatal. Therefore, citizens should take necessary precautions, urged Dr. Nilima Borade, head of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health department.
The meteorological department has predicted a further rise in temperature in the coming days. In recent days, the city’s temperature has already increased, posing a risk of heatstroke. The PMC’s health department has issued a statement emphasizing the need for citizens to take precautions. Exposure to excessive heat—such as working under the sun, in boiler rooms, or in high-temperature environments, as well as wearing tight clothing—can lead to heatstroke.
Symptoms of Heatstroke:
Nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue
Fever above 40°C (104°F), hot and dry skin, occasional redness
Lack of sweating, dehydration, dizziness, headaches
Rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, mental confusion, unconsciousness
Preventive Measures:
Avoid prolonged strenuous activities in high temperatures. If necessary, take breaks in shaded areas. Try to work during early mornings or evenings when temperatures are lower.
Avoid wearing heat-absorbing dark-colored clothes. Instead, wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothes.
Limit outdoor exposure during peak sunlight hours. Carry water while traveling.
Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Consume lemon juice, buttermilk, coconut water, and other hydrating beverages.
Use sunglasses, caps, scarves, or umbrellas when going outside.
At home and workplaces, use fans, coolers, air conditioners, and damp curtains. Keep windows open at night for ventilation.
Do not leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Even if you are not thirsty, drink water every 30 minutes. Avoid going outdoors between 12 PM and 3 PM.
First Aid for Heatstroke:
Move the affected person to a shaded area immediately.
Loosen their clothing and use water to cool their body temperature.
Keep the patient in a well-ventilated and cool room. Turn on fans, coolers, or air conditioners.
If conscious, provide cold water or oral rehydration solutions. Avoid tea or coffee.
Apply ice packs under the armpits and cold compresses on the forehead.
Monitor body temperature using a thermometer and continue cooling measures until it reaches 36.8°C (98.2°F).
Seek medical attention at the nearest PMC health center or private hospital. If hospitalization is required, call ambulance service 108 immediately.
