Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued light to moderate rainfall across Pune city and surrounding ghat regions through May 20, prompting the issuance of a yellow alert for the area.
On Friday alone, the city received 27.4 mm of rain, marking the highest single-day rainfall in May so far this year, according to IMD data.
Speaking on the weather trend, S.D. Sanap, senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, said, “Pune will see more spells of rainfall over the coming days, and a yellow alert remains in effect for both the city and adjoining hilly regions until May 20.”
The IMD has also extended yellow alerts to several other districts across Maharashtra, predicting similar rain activity statewide.
The ongoing wet spell is being attributed to increased moisture flow from the Arabian Sea, coupled with an existing wind trough over Maharashtra, which is enhancing cloud formation and precipitation.
As of May 16, Pune’s cumulative rainfall for the month has reached 59.8 mm, making it the second-highest May rainfall total in the past three years. The record for May still stands at 95.2 mm, registered in 2024.
The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in ghat sections where travel could be affected by slippery roads and low visibility due to persistent showers.
