Pune: Pune Railway Station is set to celebrate two icons of Indian rail heritage on June 1, 2025 — the 96th anniversary of the Deccan Queen and the 114th year of the Punjab Mail. Organised by the Railway Pravasi Group, the event promises a nostalgic morning for rail lovers and commuters alike.

Festivities will commence at 6:45 AM with a ceremonial cake-cutting, followed by a brief tribute at the Deccan Queen’s engine at 7:00 AM. The celebration is open to the public, and all rail enthusiasts are invited to participate.

Harsha Shah, President of the Railway Pravasi Group, shared her excitement, stating, “These legendary trains are enduring symbols of India’s rail legacy. Honouring them is a matter of pride for all of us.”

Introduced in 1930, the Deccan Queen was a pioneer in Indian rail travel — the first superfast train and the first to offer a dining car. Renowned for its elegant design and numerous innovations, including electric haulage, vestibule connections, and a dedicated women’s coach, it has been a cherished link between Pune and Mumbai for nearly a century.

The Punjab Mail, originally known as the ‘Punjab Limited’ when it debuted in 1912, is one of India’s longest-serving trains. Operating between Mumbai and Firozpur, it has played a crucial role in connecting people and places for more than 110 years.

“These are not just trains — they’re part of our shared history and culture,” Shah added.
The Deccan Queen will depart at its scheduled time of 7:15 AM, shortly after the tribute.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to be part of this memorable celebration of India’s storied railway past.
