Pune: The well-known Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha in Kothrud has recently come under scrutiny due to a persistent rat infestation. Serious issues regarding cleanliness and safety have come to light over the past few days. In a shocking incident just two to three days ago, a rat crawled into a woman’s saree during a play, creating a sense of fear among the audience.
Following the incident, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announced that it would immediately focus on improving cleanliness. Some political party workers even donated rat traps to the theatre. However, according to performers, rats are still frequently seen under the stage, in the backstage area, and in storage rooms.
Artists allege that pest control efforts are inadequate and not carried out regularly. Several safety issues have also been raised. Although CCTV cameras are installed in the theatre, it has been reported that some of them are non-functional.
The condition of the washrooms is also concerning. Audience members have pointed out that people frequently spit in corners after chewing gutkha, and that drinking water taps have broken or missing covers. Despite having a seating capacity of approximately 900 to 1,000, the number of security personnel at the venue is extremely low.
This rat problem has raised serious questions about the PMC’s theatre management. There is also a growing demand to urgently inspect the condition of other theatres across the city.
