Pune: Sandeep Singh Gill has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) for Pune Rural. He is set to assume office on Monday, May 19. Gill, who was previously serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Zone 1 in the Pune City Police Department, had already been recommended for the SP post earlier. However, the appointment was delayed due to the tenure of the then SP, Pankaj Deshmukh, not being complete.
Deshmukh had filed a petition with the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) opposing his premature transfer. The tribunal had stayed the transfer. However, Deshmukh has now been promoted and transferred as Additional Commissioner of Police in Pune city. This has cleared the path for Gill’s appointment as Pune Rural SP.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has issued orders relieving Gill from his DCP responsibilities. Gill will officially take charge as Pune Rural SP on May 19. Until further notice, Deputy Commissioner of Police Nikhil Pingale will handle the responsibilities of Zone 1.
Sandeep Singh Gill played a key role in maintaining law and order during Ganesh festivals, public events, and in curbing rising crime in central parts of the city. He maintained consistent coordination with major Ganesh mandals, building public trust. He also launched rehabilitation initiatives for juvenile offenders with the help of social organizations, earning him popularity as a public-friendly officer.
Due to Gill’s strategic, effective, and citizen-focused policing style, it is expected that his leadership will strengthen crime control in Pune Rural, promote the adoption of modern policing technologies, and encourage better communication between police and citizens.
