In a significant political development, senior Congress leader Sangram Thopte has tendered his resignation from the party, citing ongoing injustice and the urgent need to accelerate development in his region. Thopte is slated to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 22 in a formal induction ceremony to be held in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
Addressing the media, Thopte expressed his disillusionment with the Congress party, stating, “Despite being elected three times consecutively, I was never given the strength or recognition I rightfully deserved.” He emphasized that his decision to switch parties was not due to any external pressure but stemmed solely from his commitment to development and public welfare.
“Leaving the party is emotionally difficult, but I have taken this step out of respect for my supporters and the greater goal of progress,” Thopte said. He also described Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as a promising and reassuring leader for the state’s development agenda.
Making it clear that he had not negotiated for any specific position or made demands before joining the BJP, Thopte concluded, “My move is not driven by personal ambition but by a vision for sustainable development.”
With this shift, the BJP is expected to gain a strong political foothold in the region, while Congress faces yet another setback in its state-level leadership.
