Pune: A 78-year-old man from Rasta Peth, Pune, has been swindled out of Rs 45 lakh by a fraudster pretending to be an officer from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The victim, Chandran Srinivasan, filed a complaint at the Cyber Police Station, leading to a case being registered against several mobile phone users and bank account holders under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
According to the police, the elderly man was continuously threatened over the phone by the impersonator from January 27 to February 27. The fraudster convinced him that he was an RBI officer and threatened him with arrest unless he transferred large sums of money to multiple bank accounts. The senior citizen, fearful of the supposed arrest, complied with the demands, transferring Rs 45 lakh in total.
It wasn’t until the fraudster disconnected all the mobile numbers involved that the victim realized he had been deceived. Following the discovery, a complaint was lodged, and the police have initiated an investigation to track down those responsible for the scam.
