The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the duration of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) (SIR Deadline Extension) exercise for six states, allowing more time for voter roll clean-up and corrections ahead of upcoming polls. The extension aims to ensure higher accuracy in electoral rolls through fresh applications, corrections, deletions of duplicate entries, and verification drives.
According to the Commission, the states receiving the extended SIR timeline are:
Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh.
These regions had requested additional time to complete ground-level verification, house-to-house surveys, and data consolidation. The ECI agreed, citing the scale of the exercise and the need to ensure error-free voter lists.
No Extension for West Bengal
In contrast, the Commission has not granted any extension to West Bengal (SIR Deadline Extension), where the SIR process will continue as per the original schedule. The decision comes despite requests from some political groups seeking additional time.
The ECI has not publicly commented on why West Bengal was excluded, but officials indicated that the state’s SIR progress has been on track and does not require additional days.
Why SIR Matters
The Special Intensive Revision is a nationwide exercise designed to:
- Remove duplicate or deceased voters
- Update addresses and demographic details
- Enroll new voters, especially first-time electors
- Strengthen the accuracy of booth-level rolls
With elections approaching in several states (SIR Deadline Extension) , the accuracy of electoral rolls remains a critical cornerstone of the democratic process.
