Pune: Despite the state government’s directive mandating High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles, the response in Pune has been sluggish. According to figures released by the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), only 1.61 lakh vehicles have had the plates installed, out of an estimated 25 lakh vehicles registered since 2019.
This leaves a staggering 23.39 lakh vehicles still awaiting HSRP installation.
As per RTO data (till May 8):
Total orders placed: 4,24,718
Appointments booked: 3,05,226
Plates fitted: 1,61,310
Assistant Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale explained the importance of HSRP, noting that the plates enhance vehicle security and help prevent theft and counterfeiting. “This is a mandatory requirement. We’ve extended both the number of fitment centres and the deadline, but progress remains slow. Vehicle owners are urged to get their HSRPs fitted at the earliest to avoid penalties,” Bhosale said.
The implementation challenges are being felt on the ground. Santosh Wagh, a two-wheeler dealer from Kothrud, pointed out that dealers are overwhelmed with demand. “We’re facing scheduling delays due to supply chain and appointment issues,” he said.
Residents have also voiced concerns over the system. Santosh Kale, a Pune local, shared his experience: “I couldn’t book an appointment online due to a technical issue. When I went to the dealership in person, the earliest slot I received was two weeks later.”
The RTO continues to urge timely compliance, warning that last-minute rushes could worsen the backlog and lead to enforcement action.
