Pune: In a concerning trend, Pune has witnessed a spate of street crimes this week, with senior citizens and pedestrians falling victim to chain snatching, mobile theft, and robbery across various localities. At least three incidents have been reported in Dhankawadi and Cantonment areas, raising alarm over public safety.
In the Dhankawadi area, an elderly woman was robbed of her mangalsutra worth ₹90,000 by motorcycle-borne miscreants early Friday morning. According to her complaint filed at the Sahakarnagar Police Station, she was walking near Hill Top Society around 6:30 a.m. when a biker approached her on the Dhankawadi-Taljai road and snatched the gold ornament from her neck before fleeing.
Assistant Police Inspector Sagar Patil is investigating the case. Authorities have noted a worrying increase in such incidents across Pune. Just days ago, similar cases were reported in Kothrud and Pashan, where women on their morning walks and an elderly citizen were also targeted.
Elderly Man Threatened and Robbed in Cantonment
In a separate incident in the Cantonment area, a senior citizen from Wanwadi was robbed by two individuals who approached him pretending to seek blessings. The robbers pushed and threatened the elderly man near Sarbatwala Chowk on May 10, eventually snatching his wallet. The victim filed a complaint at the Cantonment Police Station. Investigations are underway.
Mobile Snatched in Sachapir Street
In another theft reported from the Sachapir Street area of Cantonment, a pedestrian had his mobile phone snatched by bike-riding thieves. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Thursday. The victim lodged a complaint with the Cantonment Police, who are currently probing the case.

Law enforcement authorities have urged citizens, especially senior citizens and early morning walkers, to remain vigilant while commuting in relatively isolated areas. The Pune Police have intensified patrolling in vulnerable zones and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the culprits involved in the recent spate of thefts.
