Pune: Following the tragic suicide of well-known neurosurgeon Dr. Shirish Valsangkar in Solapur and a troubling rise in suicide cases across the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, the Pune-based non-profit Connecting Trust has made a heartfelt appeal to young people: “Open up, talk to someone. Don’t choose irreversible paths.”
Over the last three months alone, the region has witnessed a disturbing 224 suicide cases, 177 of which were men. Many of the victims were young, underlining an escalating but often silent mental health crisis.
In response to this growing concern, Connecting Trust has amplified its suicide prevention and emotional support initiatives. With more than two decades of experience, the organization offers a judgment-free listening service through its helpline, staffed by trained volunteers who provide support without giving advice or passing opinions.
The helplines—9922004305 and 9922001122—are open daily between 10 AM and 8 PM. Individuals seeking in-person support can schedule appointments by calling 8484033312, or they can reach out via email at distressmailsconnecting@gmail.com.
Project Coordinator Vikramsingh Pawar revealed that in 2024 alone, the helpline received over 9,340 calls, with a significant 65% coming from men, mostly aged between 18 and 40. “Societal norms often prevent men from expressing their emotional struggles,” said Pawar. “They are expected to remain strong, suppress vulnerability, and silently bear emotional pain.”
Currently, Connecting Trust runs its services with the support of 47 dedicated volunteers. To expand its reach, the organization is inviting new volunteers to join their team. A 2.5-month training program is scheduled for June 2025, and those interested can inquire at 9834406033.
Despite rising awareness about mental health, suicide rates—particularly among youth—continue to climb. Factors such as academic pressure, career instability, failed relationships, financial burdens, family issues, and substance abuse are frequently cited as triggers that can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts.
Through its compassionate and non-judgmental support system, Connecting Trust is creating a safe space for individuals to unburden their emotions and seek hope. The organization’s message is simple yet powerful: You are not alone—reach out, and let someone help you carry the weight.
