Pune: As part of its initiative “Mahila Aayog Aplya Daari” (Women’s Commission at Your Doorstep), the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission held a three-day public hearing tour across Pune district, addressing a total of 305 grievances from women.
Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar led the outreach, reaffirming the panel’s dedication to delivering justice and support to women across the state. The hearings were conducted between April 15 and 17, covering Pune city, rural areas, and Pimpri-Chinchwad due to the district’s vast expanse.
On April 15, 123 cases were heard in Pune city. The next day, April 16, focused on rural Pune, where 87 complaints were addressed. The final leg on April 17 in Pimpri-Chinchwad saw 95 matters taken up. Member Secretary Nandini Awade also participated in the sessions.
Chakankar emphasised the importance of decentralising access to justice. “Our headquarters is in Mumbai, which isn’t always accessible for women from remote areas due to economic or social limitations. That’s why we take the Commission to them—along with officials like district collectors, police superintendents, and legal advisors—to ensure they receive immediate help and justice,” she stated.
Most of the grievances involved domestic and familial conflicts, with other complaints concerning workplace harassment and financial deceit. The Commission also provides counselling services aimed at helping families and couples resolve disputes amicably. Legal guidance and police assistance are offered where necessary.
Following the hearings, a review meeting was held with local administrative authorities to assess the proceedings and improve coordination.
