Pune: A 20-year-old woman tragically lost her life after slipping from the Balekilla section of Rajgad Fort and plunging into a 150-foot-deep gorge. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Thursday during a sightseeing visit with her husband.
The victim, identified as Komal Satish Shinde from Alandi, was reportedly descending the fort after exploring the Balekilla — the fort’s highest point — when she accidentally lost her balance and fell. Rescue teams from the disaster management unit were deployed to retrieve her body. She was rushed to the Velhe Rural Hospital, but doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their investigation.
This heartbreaking incident has reignited concerns among local residents regarding the lack of safety infrastructure at Rajgad Fort. According to locals, the Balekilla area, which attracts large crowds due to its historic significance and scenic views, remains poorly secured with minimal safety provisions in place.
Community members have expressed anger and frustration, claiming that several similar accidents have occurred over the years due to the absence of proper railings and warning signs. They are now urging government authorities to take swift and effective action to enhance safety at the fort and ensure no more lives are lost at the heritage site.
