Pune: A boundary wall adjacent to Mahalaxmi Vihar in Kad Nagar, Undri, gave way on Tuesday after a bout of intense rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging and significant damage to nearby properties. The collapse caused a surge of rainwater to flood several local shops, resulting in substantial financial losses for business owners in the vicinity.
Frustrated residents voiced strong criticism against the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), alleging persistent negligence. They claimed that concerns regarding the frail wall and inadequate drainage system had been raised on multiple occasions, but authorities failed to take preventive action. The incident has once again raised questions about the area’s preparedness for the ongoing monsoon season.
PMC’s drainage department confirmed awareness of the situation and assured that the affected shopkeepers would receive necessary support. He also mentioned that the matter would be escalated to the building construction department to implement prompt repairs and preventive measures.
Local shop owners have now demanded urgent reconstruction efforts and compensation for the damages incurred. The episode has shed light on the pressing need for effective stormwater management and timely inspections of infrastructure in developing localities like Undri. Residents are calling for immediate and decisive administrative action to avoid future calamities and to hold those responsible accountable.
