Pune : In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across the city, a 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped at her residence in Kondhwa by a man who posed as a courier delivery agent. The incident took place on Wednesday evening around 7:30 PM inside a gated residential society, which reportedly has strict entry protocols and CCTV surveillance.
According to police officials from Kondhwa Police Station, the accused gained entry into the society under the pretext of delivering a parcel. Disguised as a courier boy, he approached the flat of the young woman, who lives with her brother, and knocked on the door.
When the woman answered, the man claimed he had a courier for her. Upon checking and finding it was not meant for her, she told him she wouldn’t accept it. The accused then insisted she sign a document stating she had refused the delivery. When she opened the safety latch to do so, he suddenly sprayed pepper spray into her face, incapacitating her.
Taking advantage of the situation, the man forcibly entered the flat and sexually assaulted her. In a further horrifying act, he allegedly used the victim’s own mobile phone to take a selfie with her after the assault and left a chilling message on the phone, saying he had “fun” and would “come back”.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of residential security systems. As per initial reports, the society has CCTV cameras installed and requires all visitors to undergo entry registration and photograph capture at the gate. Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage and visitor logs to trace the movement of the accused.
The victim was immediately taken for medical examination and counselling. A case of rape under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Kondhwa Police Station. Senior police officials have assured that a detailed investigation is underway and that all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the accused.
“The act was premeditated. The accused seemed to have studied the society’s entry process and exploited it. We are checking CCTV footage and are also collecting forensic evidence from the spot. The victim is currently under medical care and counselling support has been offered,” a police officer said.
The brutal nature of the crime and the apparent ease with which the accused entered a secure residential complex has sparked outrage among residents and women’s rights activists in Pune. Many are demanding stricter verification of delivery personnel and better coordination between societies and law enforcement agencies.
Police are urging anyone with information about the accused or any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
